MECHANICAL ENGINEER in Western North Carolina

We are seeking a highly capable, degreed Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in process engineering to join our team in a demanding and fast-paced copper foundry environment. This role is hands-on, on-the-floor, and responsible for driving process improvements, mechanical reliability, and system optimization across the facility. The ideal candidate will be a practical problem-solver with deep technical expertise, a proactive mindset, and a strong presence on the production floor.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited engineering institution is required.
- Associate or engineering technology degrees will not be considered.
- 3+ years of experience in an industrial, foundry, or heavy manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with mechanical systems, material flow, thermal processes, and equipment reliability.
- Familiarity with root cause analysis, process control, and continuous improvement methodologies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Promote and lead a safety-first mindset, ensuring all mechanical systems and process improvements support a safe work environment.
- Work closely with operations and maintenance teams to optimize equipment performance, reduce downtime, and improve throughput.
- Lead hands-on process engineering efforts, from troubleshooting bottlenecks to redesigning mechanical systems for reliability and efficiency.
- Identify and implement process improvements using structured problem-solving and Lean principles.
- Partner with Maintenance to conduct root cause failure analyses and drive long-term corrective actions for mechanical issues.
- Support planning and execution of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
- Create and maintain mechanical drawings, equipment specs, SOPs, and job plans.
- Provide day-to-day engineering support for critical production assets including furnaces, conveyors, cooling systems, and handling equipment.
- Contribute to capital project development, execution, and commissioning.
- Develop and lead training efforts for operators and technicians in equipment function, basic troubleshooting, and process control.
- Assist with spare parts strategy development and manage specification integrity.
- Track and analyze downtime and cost data, and provide technical justification for improvements.
- Actively participate in the plant’s continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.
Preferred Skills & Competencies
- Experience with thermal systems, material handling, hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical design.
- Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for mechanical layout and equipment modifications.
- Proven ability to lead projects with minimal supervision from concept through completion.
- Working knowledge of CMMS and spare parts management systems.
- Familiarity with ERP systems (preferably NetSuite).
- Strong communication skills; able to work effectively across departments and levels of the organization.
- Organized, data-driven, and methodical with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a production-critical environment.
Work Environment
This role requires frequent presence on the production floor, including work in high-temperature, dusty, or confined spaces. Must be comfortable working in an industrial environment with appropriate PPE and interacting directly with hourly personnel, maintenance, and leadership.
